Los Angeles spousal support (alimony)
Spousal support is usually paid by the income earning spouse to the unemployed or underemployed spouse in order to maintain the marital living standards. Several factors are used to determine spousal support such as paying spouse’s ability to pay, ability to earn, spouses’ assets and debts, etc.
Spousal support is paid for a limited duration for short term marriages. For marriages over 10 years in duration spousal support may be for life or until the receiving spouse remarries.
A divorce may result in alimony payments if one spouse has a higher income than the other. While historically the paying spouse was the husband, in the current era the wife may be the top earner and subject to paying alimony.
Spousal support can be one of the most contentious issues when trying to terminate a marriage. Therefore, it is very important to consult a competent family law attorney in order to understand the financial implications of spousal support.
